The Swiss Vignette: Your Essential Guide

What is the Swiss Vignette?

The Swiss autobahn vignette is an annual sticker required for all motor vehicles (cars, motorcycles, campers, trailers) using Switzerland's national motorways (autobahns and expressways). It's a flat annual fee, valid from December 1st of the previous year to January 31st of the following year, regardless of when it's purchased.

Why You Need It & Its Cost

It's mandatory. Without a valid vignette, you face significant fines. The current cost is CHF 40. This single annual fee covers unlimited use of the Swiss motorway network for the entire validity period. There are no shorter-term options like weekly or monthly vignettes.

Where to Purchase Your Vignette

You can easily purchase the vignette at all Swiss border crossings, post offices, petrol stations, and garages in Switzerland. For convenience, many neighboring countries' petrol stations near the Swiss border also sell them. Purchase it before entering the motorway network.

Consequences of Not Having One

Failing to display a valid vignette on your vehicle while using Swiss motorways can result in a hefty fine of CHF 200, plus the mandatory purchase of a vignette on the spot. Always ensure it's correctly affixed to your windscreen – not taped or easily removable.
